Doreen Maria Ashton, 70, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2019. She was the loving wife of Ron Ashton. Together they shared 8 years of marriage.
Doreen was born August 27, 1948 in Steubenville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Rino Giovanni and Doris Zangrando Battistel. After graduating high school in 1966, she became a registered x-ray technician. At age 38 she fulfilled a dream to pursue higher education. She earned a total of five degrees: Associate of Arts (Magna Cum Laude) from Southern State Community in 1989, Bachelor of Arts (Magna Cum Laude) from Shawnee State University in 1991, Master of Divinity in 1996 and Master of Theology in 1998 from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2002 from Southern Theological Seminary. During this time, Doreen led a fulfilling role as a pastor’s wife and active mother of two. She served in ministry for 28 years and was passionate for Children’s Ministry, Vacation Bible Schools and playing piano for church services.
After moving to Louisville, KY, Doreen met her second husband, Ron. She worked to improve healthcare and rights for those overlooked. She was the State Director for KyCan, an advocacy organization for people who live with mental illness. In 2009, she retired and moved to Florida. In 2017, she relocated to Maryland to be near her grandchildren. With her grandchildren, she enjoyed doing crafts, running to shops and thrift stores and supporting their activities. She adored and spoiled her two beloved chihuahuas, Henry and Zoe.
In addition to her husband, those left to cherish her memory include, her daughter, April Suhar and husband Sean, her son, Andrew Mills, former daughter-in-law, Gina Whisler and husband Matt, grandchildren, Skylar Whisler, Willow Whisler, Isabella Suhar, Laynie Whisler, Lilah Whisler, Madelyn Suhar, Caroline Suhar, brother, Dante Battistel, nephew, Erik Battistel, brother in law, Edward Putnoky, and aunt, Rita Mattox and husband Jim. Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, Rino and Doris Battistel and sister, Rena Battistel. She will be missed by many friends and family but her legacy of love will live on.
